Description

One autumn morning while returning home from a morning wildlife search along some backroads of Oak Hammock Marsh, a bird, about the size of a crow, quickly flew in front of me and perched in the nearby grass. Due to the location, size and color, I had no idea what it might be. I stopped the car, and using my camera telephoto lens I could see it was something unusual and the large eyes through the grass suggested an owl. I shut off the vehicle but remained inside hoping to get a better view. I was shocked to see it was a Burrowing Owl. I new it was rare and I did not move. Eventually, the owl slowly made its way out of the grass and closer to the roadside slightly behind the vehicle but in clear sight. I snapped a large number of photos and contacted the "experts" I new from earlier outings and educational sessions to alert them of the sighting. Not long after the owl seemed to settle in to a roadside burrow made by some other animal. Seeing it was resting and having snapped enough photos, I started the car and slowly drove away to leave this rare bird to rest during its migration season. I left it without disturbing it but it was never seen again. It had no tags.
